Footballers who dated their team-mates’ exes from Cristiano Ronaldo to Mauro Icardi

As well as sharing a pitch, footballers can often share the same taste in women.

And that can lead to the awkward situation where they end up dating the same people.

Although they may be pulling in the same direction for their club or country, things can certainly get tense off the pitch when it comes to their love lives.

In truth, the world of football is often like one big Love Island villa, and sometimes even more dramatic.

There have been numerous examples of players dating their team-mates’ exes over the years, and Daily Star Sport is taking a look at them…

Mauro Icardi/Maxi Lopez

Where else to start but with one of the most infamous romance stories in football history?

Mauro Icardi was not only Maxi Lopez’s Sampdoria team-mate, but he was also his good friend and their families would often socialise together.

Lopez and his then wife, Wanda Nara, were struggling in their relationship, and he accused Icardi and Nara of having an affair.

They’ve since gone on to marry themselves, and to make matters worse, Icardi has Lopez’s children tattooed on his arm.

Thibaut Courtois/Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne is one of the cleanest players to have graced the Premier League, but back in 2012, he found himself in an ugly tale.

His girlfriend Caroline Lijnen alleged he had cheated on her, so decided revenge was needed.

“Kevin had deceived me and I thought ‘Why shouldn’t I do that too?’,” Lijen said in a Belgian magazine.

Revenge came in the form of allegedly sleeping with his fellow countryman Thibaut Courtois.

The pair have continued to play alongside each other for years, putting aside their issues for the good of their nation.

Jamie O’Hara/Jermaine Defoe

Former Miss England and Miss Great Britain Danielle Lloyd is one of the most prolific football WAGs in Premier League history.

She had already dated Teddy Sheringham and Marcus Bent when she hooked up with Jermain Defoe in 2007.

After their brief fling ended, his Tottenham team-mate Jamie O’Hara swooped in and he married Lloyd in 2012.

The pair divorced two years later.

John Terry/Wayne Bridge

It would be criminal to leave John Terry and Wayne Bridge off this list.

The Chelsea duo had played alongside each other for six years.

But Terry was stripped of the England captaincy in January 2010 after allegations surfaced that he had an affair with the ex-partner of his former teammate.

Vanessa Perroncel denied that an affair had ever taken place.

Terry and his fellow Chelsea defender had been close friends at Stamford Bridge and went on vacations together, but after the allegations broke Bridge refused to shake Terry’s hand before the Blues played Manchester City.

Sergio Aguero/Riyad Mahrez

The most recent love affair on this list was between Manchester City duo Sergio Aguero and Riyad Mahrez.

In 2019, Aguero was rumoured to be dating influencer Taylor Ward, while Mahrez was a married man – but that all soon changed.

Come the next year Mahrez had split with his ex-model wife Rita Johal and decided to start a relationship with Aguero’s former interest.

Cristiano Ronaldo/Sergio Ramos

Cristiano Ronaldo has dated his fair share of women throughout his career.

Model Nereida Gallardo had already dated Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in 2007 after they met in a nightclub.

And she hooked up with a footballer again in Ronaldo a year later.

Their romance lasted a few months until a bad break-up, which led to Gallardo claiming the Manchester United star was a flop in bed.
