Rangers Players, Officials Held Hostage By Katsina United Fans
Angry fans of Katsina United have held their opponents, Rangers International FC of Enugu hostage after the visitors defeated them at home in matchday 1 of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League.
Enugu Rangers defeated Katsina 2-1 in their home ground, Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina city on Sunday to start their league campaign on a promising note.
However, after the final whistle, the irate fans blocked the stadium gates and insisted that Rangers would not leave the stadium
The Flying Antelopes confirmed the situation on their official Facebook page .
“We are being held hostage here by irate fans after our win in Katsina,” Rangers said.
An inside source in Rangers who spoke to our correspondent from Katsina confimed that the club was “held hostage for over 20.minutes” after the match.
The source noted that the angry fans registered their anger over the defeat handed down to their team and threatened to attack the team.
The source who craved confidentiality said that immediately after the final whistle, Rangers players and management were asked by LMC official not to leave the dressing room.
However, when the club left the room after some minutes, some fans who refused to leave the stadium waiting for Rangers, overpowered the security at the gate and surrounded Rangers team bus.
The source added however that nobody was harmed or injured.
“After the match, Rangers players and officials were told to wait in the dressing room. Not to leave immediately, for security reasons
“But after sometime, the team left the dressing room and entered their bus but some fans who refused to leave the stadium, gathered around the Rangers team bus and refused to leave.
“They remained there for over 20 minutes before they left. The good thing is that no player or official of Rangers was touched or injured. The players and officials are in their hotel rooms as we speak,” the source said.
Calls put across to the Media Officer of Rangers were unanswered.
Rangers and Remo Stars recorded the first away wins in the NPFL new season.
Remo on the opening Friday fixture defeated MFM 2-0 in Lagos.
