Cristiano Ronaldo saves Man Utd with stunning volley vs Atalanta in Champions League

The Portuguese superstar has been on fire since re-singing from Juventus this summer and he was at his brilliant best against Atalanta on Tuesday evening.

Ronaldo equalised for United at the end of the first half courtesy of a stupendous assist from Bruno Fernandes, before saving the team in second half stoppage-time with a stunning volley.

Atalanta looked as if they were on the way to a priceless 2-1 victory thanks to Duvan Zapata’s goal, which was eventually given after a lengthy VAR review for offside.

But Ronaldo delivered the goods for United once again to equalise with just minutes remaining and it’s a strike that will rank as one of his best for the club.

What. A. Footballer.

VAR did review a potential handball by Mason Greenwood in the build-up, but no infraction was spotted by the officials.

That’s Ronaldo’s fifth goal in the Champions League this season and without him, United would be on their way to the Europa League – or worse.

If you think he’s the problem at Old Trafford right now, you really don’t know football.

Ronaldo’s dramatic late equaliser in Bergamo means United stay top of their Champions League group and they can secure qualification to the knockout stage with a victory away at Villarreal in their next game.

Had the Red Devils’ main man not emphatically rifled the ball home on the volley in stoppage-time, a defeat against the Spanish side would have seen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s eliminated from the competition.
