Separatist group in Cameroon, Ambazonia bombs AFCON host city

The Cameroon city of Limbe descended into chaos as separatist fighters set off an improvised explosive device (IED), although local police say no one was injured, Xinhua reports.

Limbe is the host city of Group F matches at the Africa Cup of Nations in games involving Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania and Gambia.

PM News are reporting that separatist fighters in the country have vowed to disrupt the AFCON tournament as they claim they do not want matches staged in that region.

It was gathered that they took to social media to claim responsibility for the blast and further threatened that it was “a warning sign of what we will do during AFCON”.

What is Cameroon government doing?

Cameroon authorities have however deployed additional ammunitions and troops to the region in order to undertake routine day and night patrols.

Separatists had since 2017 been clashing with government forces in Anglophone regions of Southwest and Northwest where they want to create an independent nation they call “Ambazonia”.

AFCON will officially begin on Sunday in the capital Yaounde and will run for four weeks.
